As the school year winds down and summer break begins, your kids will likely spend more time at home—using electronics, exploring the house, or playing outdoors. That extra time around electrical outlets, cords, and appliances means more opportunities for potential accidents if safety isn’t front of mind.
Here are simple but important tips to help keep kids safe this summer:
🔌 Outlets: Teach young children that outlets are not toys. Use tamper-resistant (TR) outlets or outlet covers if you don’t already have them installed.
📱 Chargers & Cords: Remind kids not to yank chargers or cords out of the wall and to never use damaged cords.
🚫 Water & Electricity Don’t Mix: Whether it’s playing with water balloons or coming inside with wet feet—teach kids to dry off before touching anything plugged in.
📺 Avoid Overloading Outlets: Many kids will want to plug in fans, game consoles, chargers, and more. Teach them (or help them) not to overload outlets or power strips.
🌿 Outdoor Cords & Devices: If they’re using anything plugged in outdoors—make sure it’s weather-rated, plugged into a GFCI outlet, and kept dry and off the ground.
Bonus Tip: Walk through the home and yard with your child and point out safe vs. unsafe behaviors. A few minutes of education now can prevent a lifetime of regret.
